Don Bosco Cristo Rey High School & Corporate Work Study Program is seeking an Athletic Director to lead our Athletics Program.

The Athletic Director provides leadership, vision, and administration for the interscholastic athletic program at Don Bosco Cristo Rey High School. The Athletic Director develops and implements a comprehensive athletic program that promotes student participation, sportsmanship, academic success, and alignment with the mission of the school.

The Athletic Director ensures that all athletic programs operate in compliance with league rules, school policies, and safety regulations while fostering a positive student-athlete culture and strong community engagement.

Don Bosco Cristo Rey delivers an affordable, accessible, career-focused college preparatory education in the Catholic tradition to students with limited resources. Every student participates in the Corporate Work Study Program where students gains professional work experience and earns money to pay for a significant portion of their own education.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

To perform in this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform the responsibilities of the role effectively. Athletic Program Leadership:

Provide leadership and direction for the school’s interscholastic athletic programs.
Establish goals and expectations that support student-athlete development, sportsmanship, and alignment with the mission of the school.
Evaluate athletic programs annually by reviewing participation levels, team performance, and student-athlete experience in order to identify areas for program growth and improvement.
Develop and implement strategies to increase participation across athletic offerings and strengthen the competitiveness of programs.
The Athletic Director works to strengthen existing athletic programs while expanding opportunities for student participation across all sports offerings.
Foster a culture that promotes teamwork, discipline, and school pride.
Coach Recruitment, Supervision, and Development:

Recruit, hire, supervise, and evaluate head and assistant coaches.
Establish expectations for coaches regarding student supervision, communication with families, and adherence to school policies.
Provide feedback and support to coaches to promote professional growth and program improvement.
In collaboration with Human Resources, ensure all coaches and athletic volunteers complete required background checks, HR onboarding, and child protection compliance prior to the start of each season.
Maintain Don Bosco Cristo Rey Coaches and Student Athlete Handbook.
Student-Athlete Eligibility and Academic Accountability:

Support college-bound culture of student athletes and work with the College Success and Alumni Persistence team to support recruitment efforts and athletic scholarships.
Monitor student-athlete academic eligibility and maintain records ensuring compliance with school “No Pass, No Play” policies and applicable league requirements.
Work with school leadership and academic support staff when eligibility concerns arise.
Maintain accurate records related to student-athlete participation and eligibility.
Medical and Safety Compliance:

Maintain records confirming that all student-athletes have current athletic physicals and required medical documentation prior to participation.
Work closely with the school nurse to ensure compliance with health requirements and injury reporting procedures.
Ensure adherence to safety protocols, including concussion guidelines and emergency procedures.
Obtain/maintain CPR and first-aid certifications.
Athletic Operations and Scheduling:

Coordinate scheduling of athletic contests, practices, and facilities usage.
Manage Don Bosco’s participation in the PVAC conference, including knowledge and compliance of PVAC school requirements.
Ensure compliance with all PVAC policies, eligibility requirements, and reporting expectations.
Arrange transportation logistics for athletic teams in coordination with school operations staff.
Coordinate officials and referees for athletic contests in accordance with PVAC requirements.
Oversee game-day operations including facility preparation, equipment readiness, and supervision of events.
Manage the annual Cristo Rey Cup soccer tournament, including coordination with participating schools, fundraising efforts, and day-of event logistics.
Facilities and Equipment Oversight:

Coordinate with facilities staff to ensure athletic facilities are properly maintained and safe for student use.
In conjunction with the coaches, oversee the inventory, distribution, collection, storage, repair and purchase of all equipment and uniforms.
Budget Management:

Develop and manage the annual athletic department budget.
Monitor program expenditures to ensure responsible stewardship of resources.
Work with school leadership regarding equipment needs, program investments, and future budget planning.
Communication and Community Engagement:

Maintain clear and consistent communication with the Principal and school leadership team regarding the needs and status of the athletic program.
Provide periodic updates to school leadership regarding athletic participation, program needs, and overall program performance.
Communicate effectively with students, parents, coaches, and staff regarding athletic expectations and schedules.
Work with the school’s communications team to promote athletic events, schedules, and student-athlete accomplishments.
Support school spirit through pep rallies, athletic recognition events, and community engagement.
Student Recruitment and Enrollment Support:

Support the school’s student recruitment efforts by highlighting athletic opportunities to prospective families.
Represent the athletic program at admissions events when appropriate.
Build relationships with youth programs, middle schools, and community organizations to strengthen the pipeline of future student-athletes.

Qualifications:

Required Education and Experience Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree

5-7+ years of professional experience working in education and/or athletics

Preferred Qualifications:

Previous successful experience serving as a high school Athletic Director strongly preferred.

Experience supervising coaches and managing athletic programs.

Experience developing or expanding athletic participation in a school setting.

Understanding of interscholastic athletics and eligibility requirements.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Strong leadership and organizational skills.

Demonstrates positive social and spiritual mentorship of students.

Ability to manage multiple athletic programs and schedules simultaneously.

Strong communication skills; ability to communicate effectively and professionally with parents, students, coworkers, athletic officials, and local government/parks agencies.

Administrative skills sufficient to prepare a budget, execute written communications, edit reports and documents, maintain an Outlook calendar, etc.

DBCR school spirit.

Sensitivity to working in a diverse multi-cultural environment.

Bilingual English/Spanish a plus.

Knowledge of the Catholic faith, beliefs and practices.

Understanding and commitment to the educational mission of the Archdiocese of Washington, the Salesians of Don Bosco, and the vision of the Cristo Rey Network.

Work Environment:

General school and office environment.

Flexibility required for evening and weekend athletic events.

Limited travel associated with athletic competitions.
